There are a few ways to get out of this stressful trap and streamline your marketing.

Stop Trying to Do Everything

This is the biggest stress-inducer when it comes to online marketing. Every expert tries to convince you that their way is the only way to market a business. The truth is, just about any of their methods will work. The trick to making any of them work is to only focus on one at a time.

Many business owners feel that they need to have a presence on every major social media network. The good news is, you don’t. Pick 1 or 2 and go deeper into them, instead of going wider on many different networks.

If you’re not sure which direction to go with your marketing, try conducting limited time experiments. Set aside all of your other marketing ideas, and put all of your effort into just one of them. Decide in the beginning how you will measure if this campaign was successful. Spend the next 60-90 days on just this one campaign. When your time period is up, decide if it was successful or not. If it was, then keep doing it; if it wasn’t go on to the next method and start a new experiment.

Create a Plan

Once you have cut all of the unnecessary marketing tasks from your list, it’s time to create a plan of action. Simply knowing what you need to do, and when you need to do it, can relieve much of the stress of marketing. Bouncing from one marketing tactic to another can be exhausting, but a plan will keep you focused and on track.

Which numbers matter most to your business? This might be the number of email subscribers you have or the number of books you sold. Figure out which metric makes the most impact on your business goals, and stop worrying so much about the rest.

It can be exciting to see your Facebook post get 100 Likes, but does it really matter? Or is it just a distraction?


Online marketing doesn’t need to be overwhelming and stressful. Eliminate the unnecessary noise and only focus on what matters. The goal with any marketing is to see a return on your investment. Cut out the marketing activities that don’t meet that goal.
